Loading the Climate Dice?

I believe that Paul Krugman in his latest Op Ed for the NY Times is endangering his reputation as someone whose opinion is worthy of note. Professor Krugman is an Economist, and while a self confessed liberal thinker, is a diligent researcher when it comes to his chosen subject. It is disappointing then, when he chooses to write on the equally complex subject of Global Warming, that he chooses to abandon said diligent research and instead takes the easy way out by parroting the alarmist rhetoric of (Human caused) Climate Change divas such as James Hansen.

When I see Krugman’s latest article talking about “the drowning of Florida by rising sea levels” and corn price records caused by the Midwestern drought (surely bio-fuel production is the cause of this one – as an economist he should know this) I know he has not done his homework.

Penn State involved in another coverup!

The $60 million fine just imposed on Penn State will certainly soften their cough but surely the writing was on the wall for Graham Spanier (Penn State’s ex President) two years ago.

In the wake of the Climate Gate e-mails, Penn State investigated Michael Mann – he of the Climate Hockey Stick Graph. Then as now their internal inquiry found no fault. Perhaps to clear the air Penn State’s new President should hire Louis Freeh to conduct an independent investigation into the actions of Michael Mann but then maybe they can’t afford another fine like today’s.

More interesting takes on this – and the inevitable legal action taken by Michael Mann!

Turn off Nuclear Power with the flick of a switch!

A design for a Thorium nuclear reactor addresses one of the biggest fears associated with nuclear power – meltdown. A fission reaction can be maintained by firing a proton beam (similar to that generated by the Large Hadron Collider  at CERN) in a straight line aimed at Thorium fuel (which is both more abundant and generates less nuclear waste than Uranium). The reaction can be turned off by switching off the beam. No Fukushima style meltdown if the power fails.

Sounds like a winner to me. Construction starts in 2015, should be operational by 2023. Can’t wait. Let’s hope it lives up to expectations.

Evidence of Systemic positive bias in Scientific research – What did I tell you?

A study by Dr Daniel Sarewitz has uncovered a ‘trend towards the pervasive over-selection and over-reporting of false positive results’. This is not the first time such evidence has been published. See  ‘Why Most Published Research Findings Are False’ (J. P. A. Ioannidis PLoS Med. 2, e124; 2005).

‘How can we explain such pervasive bias? Like a magnetic field that pulls iron filings into alignment, a powerful cultural belief is aligning multiple sources of scientific bias in the same direction. The belief is that progress in science means the continual production of positive findings. All involved benefit from positive results, and from the appearance of progress. Scientists are rewarded both intellectually and professionally, science administrators are empowered and the public desire for a better world is answered. The lack of incentives to report negative results, replicate experiments or recognize inconsistencies, ambiguities and uncertainties is widely appreciated — but the necessary cultural change is incredibly difficult to achieve.’

Could Methane hydrates end energy poverty?

Well if recent field trials in Alaska are anything to go by then the answer could be yes. Methane hydrates are the most abundant source of carbon based fuel on the planet. They exist in quantities many times that of oil, natural gas and coal combined. Don’t believe me?  Then take a look at this report on the most conservative of web sites – the US Geological Survey http://marine.usgs.gov/fact-sheets/gas-hydrates/title.html

I don’t want to get too excited but even US Energy Secretary Chu thinks this is a technology that should be pursued. Now there are few instances that Steven Chu and I are on the same page when it comes to energy development. Using carbon dioxide to release the natural gas trapped in ice seems to be a master stroke.

I propose that all alternative energy research money be diverted to developing this wonder technology so then all us sceptics and warmists can live together in perfect harmony – I feel a song coming on. Now what do you think are the chances of that (the harmony not the song)  – no I didn’t think so either

The Sun is in a “Muddle”

Piers Corbin, he of WeatherAction fame, has predicted that the muddled state of the Sun’s magnetic field will make things interesting, weather wise, this March. ‘Twill be interesting to see how things pan out.

Lies damned lies and Green miles per gallon figures.

Well you want to buy a new family car but you also want to be Green. Should you purchase the 5 seater Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 with its ultra-economical 70.6mpg or what you really need the mini MPV people carrier from Renault the 7 seater Grand Scenic 1.6 but it only does 64.2 mpg that’s 10% less Green. “Oh what shall we do George? We will just have to leave granny and tiny Tim at home and spend the extra €6,000 we were putting aside for Tim’s leg operation and buy the ever so Green Peugeot Hybrid.”

A common scene played out in many a  sitting room across Ireland! But wait, could this be true we have been misled by the Greens and in fact the Renault is actually more economical than the Peugeot Hybrid? Yes we are back to the Greens tried and trusted friend – the simulation/computer model. When you take these two cars off the rolling road driven by a computer simulation of a driver and actually give the cars to real people and drive on real roads we find the Renault does 3.6mpg more than the hybrid. These new figures are produced by Sensors Inc. “an American vehicle emissions specialist”. The US has now moved over to this empirical method of calculating MPG from the system still used in Europe. Why does the EU cling to an outdated system which favours Green vehicles over their (apparently) less environmentally friendly cousins? Like so many statistics used by the Green economy they do not stand up too well to scrutiny.

“Oh joy of joys tiny Tim shall walk again and granny can after all come along with the rest of the family to the zoo.”

The False Prophet is at it again.

Paul Ehrlich is at it again. In the 1960s he prophesied a new ice age, famines of biblical proportions and that by 1984 “the United States will quite literally be dying of thirst”. Now he wants the world to reduce its population voluntarily from 7 billion to 1.5 billion souls. Why? Because  otherwise we will face ‘catastrophic or slow motion [disasters]’ Me thinks the self appointed ‘population expert’cries wolf.

The world produces enough food to feed 12 billion. Half of that either rots before it reaches the dinner table or is thrown away which is to all our shame. No one should go to bed hungry – but 1.5 billion of us do. Let’s divert some of the billions wasted on global warming research (see earlier posts) to find better methods of food distribution and storage. Now that is something I wouldn’t mind spending taxes on.

Grain experiment shows higher temperatures increase yield.

I love it when someone actually does an experiment, instead of using some subjective computer model.

Chinese scientists has increased crop yields by between 3 and 6% by increasing the temperature at which they grow grain.

Today’s Science results:

Scientific Method 1 – Computer Models 0

Let’s hear it for the Scientific Method.
